Your teeth are intended to be hard enough to bite and break down food throughout the course of your life. However, there are still some things that can exceed the structural integrity of your tooth enamel resulting in a dental fracture.

This could come from an athletic injury, grinding your teeth while sleeping, or crunching down on ice. People who use their teeth as improvised tools, or nervously nibble on foreign objects are also at increased risk of suffering a chipped or fractured tooth.

If one of your teeth has damaged tooth enamel, it’s important to have the tooth examined by an experienced dentist like Dr. Bartholemew Schultz. Left untreated the fractured area could come to foster a severe cavity or lead to a second dental fracture.

In a case of significant dental trauma, he might recommend replacing the entire tooth enamel layer with a porcelain dental crown. The interior of the crown is hollow, which allows it to be anchored on an abutment created from the healthy dentin layer of the tooth.

After the existing tooth enamel has been cleared away Dr. Bartholemew Schultz will prepare an impression of the abutment as well as the neighboring teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab where the dental crown will be created.

When it is ready a member of Smiles of Distinction’s staff will call you to schedule a second appointment. Dr. Bartholemew Schultz will cement it onto the abutment to fully restore your compromised tooth.

If you live in the Savage, Minnesota, area and you have a chipped or fractured tooth, you should call 952-894-2545 to have it treated at Smiles of Distinction.
