If you allow your daily hygiene routine to become a token gesture towards oral care, then you might be allowing cavities to develop into real problems. The bacteria you don’t remove attacks your teeth and forms large pits that threaten the structure of your teeth. If they get to this stage, the cavity might be too big to repair with a filling and a dental crown may be needed.
A dental crown is a nearly perfect replica of the tooth enamel layer made from either porcelain, gold or base metal alloys. It is hollow inside and will eventually be anchored on a post-like abutment that is formed from the core structures of the tooth.
In order to make the abutment, Dr. Bartholemew Schultz will use a drill to remove the tooth enamel. Then, he will make an impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be made.
A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment. This temporary crown does not actually restore the full function of the tooth. It is only meant to protect the abutment while you wait for your new crown to be ready.
We will call you to schedule a follow-up appointment when your new crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as the temporary crown will be removed and your new crown will be cemented into place.
