Did you know there’s a huge correlation between genetics and your oral health? Although effective treatment plans and oral hygiene habits including brushing and flossing are extremely important for optimal health, chances are you may be genetically predisposed to various oral health risks that will require additional attention.

Numerous oral health risks and disorders, including sleep apnea, are highly influenced by genetics. If anyone in your family has contracted an oral health risk or condition, be aware you may be at an increased risk for it as well. This includes specific diseases and conditions including cavities, dental erosion, and gum disease, which all come with certain genetic markers. However just because nobody in your family suffers from gum disease, does not mean you won’t as well. As a helpful reminder, keep your mouth clean and clear of bacteria and plaque buildup at all times.

If it is possible, keep track of your family history and any diseases and conditions that have arisen within your family tree. Unfortunately, even though genetics and genetic testing have come a long way, modern technology does not allow us to completely predict your risk for oral health disorders.
