A badly chipped or fractured tooth can be a very serious cause for concern. If the tooth isn’t treated and repaired in short order the damaged area could start to harbor a new cavity. Since there is already some tooth enamel missing, any decay that does develop will find it that much easier to penetrate and infect the pulp or root of the tooth.

In some cases, if the fracture is small enough or in a non-critical area of the tooth, our dentist, Dr. Bartholemew Schultz can repair it with a simple filling. If a significant amount of tooth enamel was lost, Dr. Schultz might recommend restoring the tooth with a crown. This is essentially a replica of your tooth enamel, cast in porcelain.

To do this, Dr. Schultz will use a drill to remove all of the tooth enamel. This leaves behind a post-like abutment of dentin that encases the pulp and root of the tooth. A detailed impression is then made of the area. This will be sent to a professional dental lab, where your final crown is made. Then a hard plastic temporary crown is cemented over the abutment to protect it.

We will call you to schedule a follow up appointment when your new crown is ready. This appointment will be brief as the temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is cemented into place.
