Do you want a top-notch smile? If so, you need to prevent enamel erosion as much as possible. This dental issue occurs when your tooth enamel is exposed to acid frequently, whether that’s by consuming acidic foods or drinks or vomiting frequently (this is common during pregnancy and if you suffer certain eating disorders). Our dentist, Dr. Bartholemew Schultz, recommends preventing enamel erosion because:

-Enamel erosion opens the channels in the tooth that lead to the tooth nerve. This causes tooth sensitivity.

-Enamel erosion wears away the enamel and exposes the underlying dentin, which causes tooth discoloration.

-Enamel erosion makes the teeth vulnerable to tooth chips and breaks because the enamel is so fragile.

-Enamel erosion makes the teeth vulnerable to the effects of tooth decay.

-Enamel erosion can change the shape and appearance of your teeth by creating cups (indentations) in the enamel.

In order to prevent enamel erosion, it’s best to avoid acidic exposure (by limiting your consumption of acidic foods and drinks or by vomiting less). You should also rinse your mouth with water immediately after acidic exposure and wait 30 minutes to brush your teeth.
